An electrically heated eye mask developed by optometrists and tested in New Zealand optometry practice, designed to deliver the sustained, controlled warmth that blocked meibomian glands need. It holds a stable temperature for the full session rather than cooling within the first two minutes, which is where ordinary warm compresses fail.
Why sustained temperature matters
The oil glands set into your eyelids secrete the lipid layer that stops your tears evaporating. When that oil thickens or the gland openings block, the tear film loses its cap and evaporates within seconds of a blink. This is meibomian gland dysfunction, and it is the most common cause of dry eye.
Meibomian oil is solid at room temperature. It only flows once warmed to roughly 40°C, measured at the eyelid rather than at the compress. That is the entire mechanism, and it is why warm compresses so often appear not to work — the heat is real for ninety seconds and notional for the remaining eight minutes.
How to use it
Apply to closed eyes for around ten minutes, once or twice daily while treating active symptoms. Follow immediately with gentle expression along the lid margin while the oil is still soft, then clean the lid margin. Heat, then express, then clean — in that order. Reversing it is the commonest reason a home routine achieves nothing.
For a stye or chalazion, the same routine applies but the duration differs: a stye usually settles within one to two weeks, while a chalazion needs sustained heat over weeks.
Who it is for
People with evaporative dry eye, meibomian gland dysfunction, blepharitis, recurrent styes or chalazions, and anyone whose optometrist has recommended warm compress therapy. It is also a sensible end-of-day measure for heavy screen users, whose incomplete blinking leaves the lower glands under-expressed.
If you are unsure whether your dry eye is evaporative, our guide to identifying which type you have is the place to start.

Common questions
How long should I use the mask for?
Ten minutes per session is the usual recommendation. Research measuring temperature at the inner eyelid found that at least four minutes of properly maintained contact is needed to bring the inner lower lid to 40°C, and longer for more severe obstruction.
How often should I use it?
Once or twice daily while you are actively treating blocked glands, then several times a week for maintenance. Meibomian gland dysfunction is a chronic condition, so stopping entirely usually means symptoms return.
Why not just use a warm flannel?
A flannel loses useful temperature within about two minutes. Measurements comparing compress methods found a flannel left in place without reheating brought the inner lid to only 38.8°C after four minutes and went no higher, never crossing the threshold at which meibomian oil flows.
Is it safe after eye surgery or with glaucoma?
Check with your surgeon or optometrist first. Heat is commonly recommended after some procedures and avoided after others, and the timing matters more than the device.
Can I use it if I wear contact lenses?
Remove lenses before use. Apply the mask to closed eyes with the lenses out, and reinsert afterwards if you are still wearing them that day.
