Pure cold-pressed castor oil for the eyelid margin, in a 10ml bottle. A single ingredient, for the daily lid hygiene step that underpins every other dry eye treatment.
What lid margin care actually does
The lid margin is where your oil glands open, where lashes emerge, and where bacteria, debris and Demodex mites accumulate. An inflamed or clogged margin narrows the gland openings, which means heat therapy has less to work with and supplements have less effect.
This is the least glamorous part of dry eye treatment and frequently the most decisive. Two minutes a day, done consistently, changes more than an occasional thorough clean.
Castor oil and Demodex
Almost everyone carries Demodex mites in their lash follicles. It is the population size, not their presence, that causes disease — and when it grows, the result is itching, crusting, redness, and the waxy collarettes at the lash base that optometrists look for.
Castor oil has a growing evidence base for this specifically, including a 2025 University of Auckland study. Treatment has to outlast the mite life cycle, so think in months rather than weeks.
How to use it
At night, after cleansing and after any heat treatment, apply a small amount along the lash line with a clean fingertip or cotton bud. Do not put it in the eye. Our nightly eyelid routine covers the technique in detail, and how to use it safely covers the cautions.
Why purity matters here
Cold-pressed means the oil is extracted mechanically without heat or chemical solvents. For something applied nightly to the lid margin, where it will inevitably reach the tear film, that distinction is worth more than it sounds. We have written separately on cold-pressed versus regular castor oil.

Common questions
How long before I see a difference?
Expect several weeks rather than days. Lid margin treatment works by gradually reducing the mite population and the inflammation it causes, and stopping at two weeks is the most common reason it appears not to work.
Why cold-pressed specifically?
The extraction method determines what else ends up in the oil. Heat and solvent extraction leave residues that are acceptable in an industrial lubricant and not in something applied nightly to the eyelid margin.
Is castor oil actually supported by evidence for Demodex?
There is a growing evidence base, including a 2025 University of Auckland study examining castor oil against Demodex mites. It is not a cure-all, and it works best as part of a lid hygiene routine rather than on its own.
Can I use it with a heated eye mask?
Yes, and the order matters. Heat first to soften the gland contents, then clean the lid margin. Applying oil to a cold, clogged lid does less.
Is it safe to leave on overnight?
Overnight application is the usual approach for Demodex, because it covers the period when the mites are most active. Apply a small amount along the lash line, not into the eye.
